Do you feel constantly exhausted and lacking motivation to do the things that once you looked forward to doing? Is food no longer appetizing or is it something that you've sought solace in? Does your mind feel detached and unable to focus or process even what would be the most simple of tasks? When you are able to focus, does it seem as if it is only on the negative aspects or outcomes of situations? Is it difficult to clear this mental fog and to feel like yourself? The self that seems difficult to recognize in photos smiling? Are even the most beautiful of memories somehow marred by these negative thoughts? These can all be symptoms indicative of depression.
Studies from the Archives of General Psychiatry, 2005 Jun; 62(6): 617-27 show that 14.8 million Americans over the age of 18 suffer from depression in any given year. The Journal of the AMA published data that shows depression is more prevalent in women than men.
